Computer Science and Design as well as Media Informatics represent special application-oriented variants of computer science. Both programmes address the computer as a medium in all its facets. In addition to mathematics and physics and to the technical foundations of computer science, the courses include modules on media design, media technology, internet languages, interactive systems and computer graphics.

The design courses in the Bachelor´s programme include basic modules, such as design basics, photo design and web design. The Master´s programme includes interface design and design management. In addition, the course involves project work with a focus on design and in-depth exploration of subjects, as well as Bachelor and Master level theses.

Bachelor’s Courses

Computer science and design graduates are intermediaries between computer science, media conception and design. They are proficient in the development and application of software to create images, texts and audio-visual media. The Bachelor’s programme in Computer Science and Design, which started for the first time in the winter semester 2025, is newly conceived and highly innovative. It provides in-depth knowledge in applied computer science as well as in the design and technology of computer-based media, equipping students with the skills to develop sophisticated modern computer applications in an industry that is constantly evolving.

Master’s Courses

The Master´s programme in Media Informatics deals with applications in the field of electronic media and with the design of human-computer interfaces.

Today, the field of ‘media’ is no longer limited to a specific sector. It also includes what is known as ‘new media’, above all multimedia products, computer games, the Internet and interfaces for many computer-aided applications. Media Informatics is becoming relevant in practically all sectors of our economy as a cross-sectional technology.

START Project (STP)

The students become familiar with and understand the interplay between computer science and design. Working systematically in groups, they develop a (socio-)technical application through the project phases of context analysis, conception, design, and prototypical development.

START Design (STD)

Students acquire basic knowledge in composition, layout and typography. The aim is to develop a fundamental sensibility for design and basic skills in design composition and the use of typefaces. The acquired knowledge is expanded in practical design work. Students acquire skills in using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign as design tools.

Learning Unis (LU)

The Designing learning units are compact, project-related elective courses that students can combine according to their individual interests. They cover a broad spectrum from visual and interactive design to research and project management, including 3D modeling, animation, game and web design, prototyping, storytelling, and scientific work.

Design Management (DSM)

Design Management is an advanced design research module. Students acquire knowledge and experience in how design processes work in a corporate context. They are trained in planning, budgeting and implementing design projects in a structured way, both as freelance and employed designers, and in presenting their design projects professionally. With the design theory knowledge they have acquired, students are able to present a well-founded design rationale.

Advanced Interface Design (AID)

Students have advanced understanding of the tasks and success factors involved in implementing complex media informatic technology projects as part of a team. Students are able to assess, select and apply established methods, procedures and tools, both independently or as members of a team, in order to develop complex media informatic and technology applications. Students are able to familiarise themselves, both independently or as team members, with a specific application domain to such an extent that they can communicate appropriately with users in order to design solutions in collaboration with them.
