Problem Statement

Educational Game is a part of the GIPE project (Global Intercultural Project Experience), which is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and is a university cooperation with forty-five students from Indonesia, Namibia, Peru and Germany.

The Puspanita Eco Spirit Center wanted us to design and develop a game for children about sustainability. But how do you make a game interesting and informative at the same time? And what do modern games look like, when we develop the game idea? Our most important project goal is that the customer is fond of our Educational Game.

Idea and Concept

„PUSPANITA HARMONY OF NATURE“ is an adventure game for children aged between 8 and 12 that represents the different zones in the Puspanita Eco Spirit Center in Indonesia. In each level there are social, economic and ecological challenges to be completed. The children will be able to recognize the place while playing.

There are 4 characters in the game, each representing the elements of earth, water, fire and air. These characters are responsible for helping Mother Nature and nature itself. For each completed challenge, the player obtains a jewel. First, the player will be rewarded with a heart jewel for completing the social challenge. Then a coin jewel if they complete the economic challenge. Lastly, the player can score a flower jewel by completing the ecological challenge.

Implementation

At first, we planned our project on the online-whiteboard Miro. In the next step, we modeled individual assets and characters with the open source 3D creation suit Blender. After planning the levels, they were designed and developed in Unreal Engine 4. We used GitLab to develop the game at the same time and on different computers. We communicated via Discord when we worked from home. In addition, we met once a week at the university. For our textures, we used Adobe Photoshop. Lastly, we used Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects for the game trailer.
